5-Axis Ceramic Machining Services for Complex Precision Parts

Complex ceramic parts can become difficult to manufacture when they combine multiple machining faces, angled features, deep pockets, thin sections, small holes and tight tolerances.

For these parts, 5-axis ceramic machining provides greater flexibility in tool access and workpiece positioning than conventional 3-axis machining.

At Jundro, we operate two Beijing Jingdiao 5-axis machining centers, with working ranges of approximately 400 mm and 500 mm.

When Is 5-Axis Machining Needed?

The need for 5-axis machining is mainly determined by the part geometry, size, machining access and precision requirements, rather than the ceramic material itself.

Typical features that may benefit from 5-axis machining include:

  • Angled holes
  • Inclined surfaces
  • Complex 3D profiles
  • Deep pockets
  • Slots and grooves
  • Multiple machining faces
  • Thin walls
  • Features referenced to different planes

With conventional 3-axis machining, some of these features may require multiple setups or additional fixtures.

A 5-axis machine allows the tool and workpiece to be oriented in different directions, providing better access to difficult features and reducing unnecessary repositioning.

The goal is not simply to use all five axes. The machining strategy is selected according to the actual part geometry and drawing requirements.

Our 5-Axis Ceramic Machining Capability

Jundro currently operates two Beijing Jingdiao 5-axis machining centers:

  • Approximately 400 mm working range
  • Approximately 500 mm working range
  • Multi-axis workpiece positioning
  • Complex-angle and multi-surface machining
  • Through-spindle coolant for applicable operations

The actual machinable size depends on the part geometry, workholding method, tool access and required tolerances.

5-axis CNC machining is integrated with our other ceramic manufacturing processes, including:

5-Axis CNC Machining → Precision Grinding → Finishing → Cleaning → Inspection

The exact sequence depends on the part.

Machining Hard-Brittle Ceramics

Jundro specializes in precision machining of hard and brittle ceramic materials, including:

Different ceramic materials require different tools, machining parameters and process conditions.

However, the decision to use 5-axis machining is primarily based on the component structure and precision requirements.

5-Axis CNC and Precision Grinding

5-axis machining is often only one stage of manufacturing a precision ceramic component.

CNC machining can be used to create complex profiles, angled features and multiple machining faces.

Precision grinding can then be used for critical requirements such as:

  • Flatness
  • Parallelism
  • Thickness
  • Dimensional accuracy
  • Surface finish

Combining these processes allows us to handle parts that require both complex geometry and tight dimensional control.

What Types of Parts Can We Machine?

Our 5-axis ceramic machining capability is suitable for complex components used in:

Typical features include complex 3D profiles, angled holes, slots, grooves, deep pockets, thin sections and multiple machining faces.

From Drawing to Finished Part

Before machining, we review the material, dimensions, geometry, tolerances, surface requirements and inspection requirements.

A 2D drawing provides the dimensional and tolerance requirements, while a 3D STEP file helps us evaluate the geometry and machining access.

Based on these requirements, we determine whether 5-axis machining is appropriate and how it should be combined with grinding and other processes.

5-Axis Ceramic Machining at Jundro

Jundro combines 5-axis CNC machining, precision grinding and dimensional inspection to manufacture hard-brittle ceramic components according to customer drawings.

Our current capabilities include:

  • Two Beijing Jingdiao 5-axis machining centers
  • Approximately 400 mm and 500 mm working ranges
  • Complex multi-surface machining
  • Through-spindle coolant for applicable operations
  • Precision grinding
  • CMM and optical inspection
  • Machining of Al₂O₃, AlN, SiC, Si₃N₄, ZrO₂, Macor and other technical ceramics

If you have a complex ceramic component, send us your 2D drawing and 3D STEP file.

We can review the geometry, material and tolerances, assess whether 5-axis machining is appropriate, and provide a quotation.
