{"id":967,"date":"2026-09-14T07:05:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T07:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jundro.com\/?p=967"},"modified":"2026-09-14T07:05:26","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T07:05:26","slug":"silicon-nitride-semiconductor-equipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jundro.com\/es\/silicon-nitride-semiconductor-equipment\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Silicon Nitride Is Replacing SiC and Alumina in Semiconductor Equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days ago, one of our long-term customers contacted me for a quotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interesting part was not the drawing itself. The material specified on the drawing was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jundro.com\/material\/silicon-carbide-ceramics\/\">silicon carbide (SiC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when we talked, he was actually asking whether we could provide the same type of component in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jundro.com\/material\/silicon-nitride-ceramics\/\">silicon nitride (Si\u2083N\u2084)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This customer is a semiconductor equipment engineer. Over the past year, we have supplied him with many ceramic components made from alumina and silicon carbide, including chucks, rings, and other precision parts used in semiconductor equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So naturally, I asked him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why silicon nitride this time? The price of silicon nitride will be more expensive than silicon carbide, and the processing cycle will be longer and the risk will be higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His answer was also quite interesting. He said, &#8220;<strong>Our competitors are all using silicon carbide, and our customers also want us to try silicon nitride<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is actually something we have been noticing more and more recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some semiconductor equipment manufacturers are starting to look at silicon nitride for components that have traditionally been made from silicon carbide or alumina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t mean silicon carbide and alumina are no longer good materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are still widely used, and each has its own advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interesting question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why are engineers starting to consider silicon nitride for some of these applications?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Does Silicon Nitride Actually Make Sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After talking with this customer, I started thinking about the question from another angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If silicon nitride is more expensive, takes longer to machine, and is more difficult to process, why would anyone want to replace silicon carbide or alumina with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is that the material cost is only one part of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some semiconductor components, the real concern is not simply whether the material can withstand high temperatures. It is how the component behaves after repeated mechanical contact, thermal cycling, plasma exposure, and long-term operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is precisely where the properties of silicon nitride ceramics offer an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High-Frequency Mechanical Contact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some components inside semiconductor equipment experience repeated mechanical contact or movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When this happens thousands or even millions of times, wear and impact become important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among ceramics, silicon nitride ranks second only to zirconia in terms of fracture toughness, making it an excellent choice for equipment components subject to repeated mechanical loads and impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For these applications, the goal is not necessarily to find the hardest material.<br>It is to find a material that can survive repeated mechanical stress without easily cracking or chipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High-Stress Ceramic Chucks and Structural Components<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ceramic chucks and other structural components can experience more stress than their simple appearance suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may contain holes, grooves, thin sections, or other features that create local stress concentrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alumina has been widely used for these types of components, while SiC is also common in demanding semiconductor applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and thermal shock resistance become more important, silicon nitride can be considered as an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean every chuck should be made from silicon nitride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means that for certain high-stress designs, the material deserves to be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specific CVD and Etch Plasma Environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another area worth watching is semiconductor process equipment exposed to specific CVD or etching plasma environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these environments, the ceramic component has to deal with more than just temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plasma exposure, chemical interaction, surface wear, particle generation, and long-term dimensional stability can all become important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also why material selection can vary from one process to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A material that performs well in one chamber or process may not necessarily be the best choice in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, Why Silicon Nitride?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we simplify the material selection process, the difference looks something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" is only a general guide<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Reason Behind the Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going back to the customer I mentioned at the beginning, his answer made me think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His competitors were using silicon carbide, but their customers were asking them to try silicon nitride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tells us something interesting about how material selection is changing in the semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, engineers are not looking for a cheaper material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are looking for a material that can solve a problem that the existing material does not solve well enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when that problem involves repeated mechanical stress, high loads, thermal cycling, wear, or a specific process environment, silicon nitride can become a very interesting option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next question, however, is a little more complicated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If silicon nitride
